Grandparent Interview

This is an interview between my Dad's father, John Rose and me, Sam Rose. This interview was made for a school family history project.

Interview with Granddaddy:

I received the privilege and time to sit with my grandfather, John Milton Rose Jr., and interview him on his life and philosophy. I learned many thing during this interview with "Granddaddy" as we call him. I have recorded the interview above.

Granddaddy was born in Fayetteville, NC on June 17, 1923. He had a brother, Sol, and a sister, Aleene. He was the middle child who was left with chores like cutting wood for the stove and bringing in drinking water from the spring twice a day. He enjoyed his position in the family and respected his mother and father very much.

John's first school was at Haymount Elementary which taught grades K-7th. His favorite subject in school was English and reading. His least favorite school was music class. John enjoyed playing football in his early school years and later became interested in basketball and tennis. He still keeps in contact with some former school mates who go to the same church, and they are still great friends today.

John was a man of man occupations. In high school he worked three jobs: grocery store clerk, worked at the lumber mill, and at the post office delivering mail. His long-term job was being a member of the United States Airforce. He worked as a polite for around 20 years, and then went into airline maintenance for about 10 to 15 years. To join the Airforce, he was required to take a test first to see if he was able to join. Once he pasted that, he went through a basic army training then had to attend three different flying schools. The only education that was required was to graduate from high school. After practice, training, and college aid education, he was commissioned and ready to fly into battle. The hardest thing about flying is when there are obstacles like rain and bad weather that blind you. There were times when it got so bad, he couldn't even see the ground to land. Even though John flew most of his career, he tell me he really enjoyed the logistics and tactical part of the Airforce that he experienced in the last 15 years of his service.

John really enjoys all the thing in his day to day life to day and there is so much he is thankful for. He grew up with no running water in the house and no electricity so both of those are wonderful conveniences of today. One of the most important modern convenience in his life is the medical programs and services today, allowing him to get the medical care and medicine need to keep him and his family healthy. He participates in many activities to day such as going to the county club, taking his daughters dog for walks, maintaining the family cabin, playing golf, going to church, taking care of the garden, and spending time with his wife, Virgina. Being in the Airforce, he traveled all around the world staying and exploring places like England, North Africa, France, Germany, the Philippines, and Southeast Asia. He has traveled to many places but says he'll always like his home in Fayetteville best.

Granddaddy has much experience with people all across the world and I trust his philosophies on life. He says that in order to get along with people, you must be able to control you temper and agree to disagree. His role model was his mother because even though she always had a lot on her hands, she was able to tackle them all. She was a wonderful mother and love her children very much. If he could meet anybody in his life time, he would want to meet John F. Kennedy because of all the good he did for America. My dad did meet Kennedy. The polio vaccine was the most significant discovery in his life time, because polio was rapidly spreading in America, causing lots of damage. The biggest problem in the world today is not understanding each other. His advise to solving this problem is to do a better job of communication and listening.

My grandfather,John Milton Rose Jr., has enlightened me very much with this interview and has taught me much about his life. I have learned what it was like back in the 1920s and 30s for a family of five. I know what some of the worlds best inventions and discoveries that we have taken for granite these days. I will pass along his advise about communication and understanding each other to my children and will always remember this for myself though out life. I am so glad I was able to have this interview with my grandfather will remember this information to pass on to the generation after me.
